Recent letters have criticized the Pentagon's acquisition system and offered ideas for improvements (Jan. 23-Feb. 5, p. 7). Some readers drew on past experience. But others repeated significant misrepresentations, notably saying the Vought F4U was fielded in "an incredibly short time." Actually, its development was slow, partly because the design combined a new airframe with a new engine. Ever since, the Navy has avoided that mistake by working in a more methodical way.
