ViaSat-1 was the highest-capacity satellite in existence when launched in October 2011. Built by Space Systems/Loral and based on its 1300-series bus, the 15,000-lb. geosynchronous satellite, provides 140 Gbps of capacity via 72 service beams. These spot beams, isolated from each other by polarization and other techniques, allow the K_a-band frequencies to be reused for increased capacity and efficiency. The satellite cost about $500 million, including launch, ground systems and insurance.
