In most engine development programs, a full year between the run of the first and second test units is not usually a good sign. However, that the gap is deliberate for General Electric's GE9X program differentiates it from the norm. Testing of the second full engine for Boeing's future 777X twinjet is just getting underway, a little more than 13 months after the first GE9X development unit fired into life at the company's Peebles, Ohio, test facility, and about 1.5 years after first runs of the complete core. But the long interval is all part of a diligently laid-out risk-reduction plan that saw the first engine run much earlier than usual for application on an aircraft not even destined to make its first flight until late 2018.
