To the untrained eye, the departure of a pair of Delta Air Lines and United Airlines Boeing 737-900ERs at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) was a typical sight on a normal Saturday evening in late August. Closer inspection, however, would reveal something very different. The two aircraft stayed together in the pattern for almost 3 hr., conducting unusual, closely linked curved and straight-in approaches-in some cases never before seen at the airport-and performed numerous go-arounds after each apparent landing attempt.
