Germany's second-largest airline, Air Berlin, has been ailing for years, thanks to a toxic mix of mismanagement at the top and divergent shareholder interests. Now it is pinning its hopes on new CEO Stefan Pichler to right this situation. But does he have the skills and time needed? The new CEO held important positions in Germany's airline industry more than 10 years ago. He led Lufthansa's sales division and then ran leisure group Thomas Cook, but was fired when losses mounted. His next several jobs in the last decade were for airlines outside of Europe, notably Virgin Australia Airlines, Jazeera Airways and Fiji Airways.
