When Malaysia Airlines (MAS) hired Christoph Mueller as CEO, most in the industry assumed he was brought in to resuscitate a failing airline. Not Mueller, though. He views MAS as a clean-sheet opportunity to build a company from scratch. The carrier will be a start-up in many respects, Mueller said at his first major press conference in Kuala Lumpur. A new entity has been created to run MAS, with a reduced number of workers rehired under modified terms, a leaner operation, and even a new headquarters and brand. These steps are designed to achieve what the previous incarnation could not-to compete profitably against low-cost carriers and long-haul airlines from Asia and beyond.
