Fears that the new generation of low-cost, lightweight unmanned aircraft could pose a threat to air safety are forcing regulators to reach out to a wider audience to take control of a potentially dangerous situation. These lightweight, remotely piloted aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), sometimes controlled from mobile electronic devices, can be operated out of direct line of sight with a so-called first-person view system using a camera fitted to the platform. Unfortunately, they often are operated by people with little understanding of the rules of the air. Here in the U.K., the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has developed what it calls its Dronecode, calling on UAV operators to use their remotely piloted aircraft safely.
