Lithium-ion batteries and cells, shipped in bulk by the millions in air cargo every year, pose a dual threat when it comes to potential safety issues: The devices are both an ignition source and a fuel source, neither of which is fully extinguished by Halon suppressant systems. The typical failure mode-a short circuit, followed by a thermal runaway-will quickly raise packaging temperatures to l,100F, burning the cardboard material in shipping boxes and generating large amounts of hydrogen gas that will vent from the box and potentially explode. An external fire, if it heats the cells in the box to 400-450F, will also set the same process in motion.
