摘要

Kenya Airways, once one of Africa's most ambitious and profitable network carriers, is in deep crisis. Management, with the help of outside consultants and a government loan to keep the airline afloat, is trying to turn the tide but as CEO Mbuvi Ngunze points out, "Rome wasn't built in a day. When you look at restructuring a business, it takes time." While Kenya Airways puts the building blocks of its overhaul in place and fights for survival, its main rival in sub-Saharan Africa, Ethiopian Airlines, is marching full steam ahead with its expansion. The Addis Ababa-based airline was the first African operator to take delivery of the Boeing 787-it currently has 13 787-8s in its fleet and has orders for six more-and will also be the first Airbus A350 operator in Africa when it takes delivery of the aircraft next year. It will operate 14 A350-900s, and CEO Tewolde Gebremariam has indicated the carrier plans to order at least a further 10 A350 in the next two years.
