Despite winter storms in the U.S. that cost the four major U.S. carriers hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue and caused the cancellation of tens of thousands of flights, most U.S. airlines have done well in the first quarter, historically a weak period for the industry, forcefully demonstrating that consolidation has been a net benefit for the business. But the picture is not pretty for all. While the recent mergers have been a major success for most, there is the specific case of United Airlines. The airline, which is the result of a merger between the old United and Continental, has seen results deteriorate. That is partly related to the severe winter weather, but not even United executives say this is the only reason.
