The industry (and Airbus) have yet to be convinced of the merits of reengining the Airbus A380. But the project clearly has one big fan: Emirates Airline President Tim Clark. "My own view is that this is what we should do as the main player," he says. But should Airbus really take the risk? The A380 has clearly become the manufacturer's iconic brand ambassador and, to a degree, it has adopted a similar role at Emirates, by far its largest operator. But while the airline says flying the A380 is very profitable and enables it to gain market share faster than any other aircraft would, the math is clearly different for Airbus: Should it put more money into a program that probably won't see a full return on investment for the next two decades?
