Over the next decade, Warsaw expects to spend nearly $50 billion to strengthen its military via a sweeping modernization effort that includes air and missile defense, new helicopters, unmanned reconnaissance systems air transport, anti-tank missiles and trainer aircraft. Poland's defense industry is the largest in Central Europe, with nearly $10 billion in military expenditures planned in 2013. The Polish defense ministry says 2013-16 spending will total $43 billion, including $12 billion for modernization initiatives. From 2017-22, total spending is planned to be $86.5 billion, with $32.3 billion earmarked for modernization.
