Pratt & Whitney will stick to its original cost-cutting plan when it submits proposals for the next batch of fighter engines, despite procurement uncertainty over the F-35B short-take-off-and-vertical-landing (Stovl) variant. Then engine maker is working to prepare its bid to the Pentagon for low-rate initial production (LRIP) Lot V engines at the end of May. The original cost-reduction plan presented by Pratt at the time of the late 2009 F135 Joint Assessment Team review continues to provide the basis for the engine maker's production-lot proposals despite the recent program revisions. This outlined, lot by lot, a cost curve from LRIP III through Engine 250, which is now expected in LRIP VIII rather than VI or VII as envisioned before the program's most recent schedule stretchout.
