Even though the longtime Airbus-Boeing duopoly is slowly coming to an end—courtesy of Russia's United Aircraft Corp. and China's Comae, among others—it will likely take a few years before the new entrants can capture a big enough market share to rattle their European and American rivals. Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary, always ready to beat the competition in terms of free publicity, has indicated his airline could well acquire up to 200 Comae C919s to replace aging Boeing 737s and create additional capacity. In his vision, O'Leary expected to trigger a little anxiety at Boeing's corporate and manufacturing headquarters; in reality, he obtained a discreet "no comment." And, as usual, John Leahy, Airbus's chief operating officer for customers, remained coy. For several years, he has rejected O'Leary's demands for unrealistically discounted aircraft nrices.
