Aviation is not immune to the hopes and hype surrounding emissions-free electric vehicles, and European aerospace giant EADS has fueled the debate by unveiling a concept for an all-electric airliner it believes could emerge within 25 years. The VoltAir uses two containerized batteries in the forward hold, powering electric motors in the tail that drive contra-rotating shrouded propellers. Liquid nitrogen cools the high-temperature superconducting cables and motors. Depleted batteries are removed, replaced and recharged on the ground between flights to avoid slowing turn-arounds.
