Reader Harry White misses the point when he suggests replacing side-sticks with yokes would have helped the doomed Air France Flight 447 (AW&ST Sept. 19, p. 10). Pilots need to undergo more rigorous training to recognize and take appropriate action when faced with unreliable sensors, including, but not limited to, airspeed pitots. Also, pitots should be augmented with another sensor based on a completely different technology. Although a GPS system, for example, can only provide ground speed indication, in the absence of reliable airspeed indication you could do worse than keeping the same heading and ground speed, while perhaps reducing altitude to increase the available flight envelope until the airspeed problem can be resolved.
