A Franco-Italian deal for a new military communications satellite marks a new step in milspace collaboration between the two countries. The deal for Sicral 2, a new 4-ton class military communications satellite to be built and launched by Thales Alenia Space and Telespazio, was signed jointly by the Italian and French defense ministries on May 7. Italy will lead the Sicral 2 program and will fund 68% of the satellite's €295-million ($369-million) cost, with France footing the remainder.
