The Italian government is assuring its aerospace, defense and other high-technology industries that the global economic crisis will not lead it to curtail research and development spending. During a recent meeting of the inter-ministerial committee on the development of the aerospace industry, the government approved a €900-million ($1.27-billion) package to support a range of aerospace and electronic programs. Claudio Scajola, minister for economic development who chaired the meeting, says the government will recoup the outlays through royalties on the eventual sale of equipment benefiting from the government spending. Although the approved list of programs hasn't been released, military officials indicate that helicopters, unmanned aircraft and diesel engines for UAVs, communications programs, new obstacle avoidance and navigation systems, and active avionics sensors would all receive a boost. Also, the government expects to finance development of the four-channel fly-by-wire system for the Alenia Aer-macchi M-346 advanced jet trainer. Mission computer work on the C-27J tactical transport and financing support for Italian aerospace companies involved with Airbus commercial programs also is in the cards.
