When NASA Ames Research Center and Northrop Grumman thought about smashing into a lunar crater with a man-made meteor to search for water, they needed a cheap and easily adaptable spacecraft bus to make the mission possible.rnThey found it in a 62-in.-dia., 0.5-in.-thick aluminum payload adapter ring that CSA Engineering originally developed for an experimental mission on the Atlas V by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Now that the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (Lcross) has met its fate, the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle Secondary Payload Adaptor (ESPA) ring on which it was based is being offered in a smaller version that should open it for missions far beyond the heavy-weight Atlas V and Delta IV EELVs it was made for.
