Northrop Grumman is using a full-size mock-up of the James Webb Space Telescope's backplane and sunshield to test integration and develop methods for handling the next-generation observatory as it works through the critical design review (CDR) for the telescope unit.rnThe review marks a major uptick in coming milestones for the NASA-led project which will undergo a CDR for the sunshield in early December, and another for the full mission in the March-rnApril 2010 period. The telescope, a joint project of NASA and the European and Canadian space agencies, is on track to be launched in 2014. The telescope and spacecraft are being developed by a Northrop Grumman-led team including Ball Aerospace & Technologies, Alliant Techsystems (ATK) and ITT.
