An unexpected alliance with EADS Astrium could hasten plans by Khrunichev to become a major Russian telecom spacecraft supplier, and help keep Astrium competitive in global markets. Astrium and Khrunichev last week signed an agreement to jointly supply the first of a new generation of higher-power spacecraft to Russian Satellite Communications Co. (RSCC), Russia's leading telecom operator, to help meet mushrooming demand for broadcast, Internet and fixed and mobile communications services. The spacecraft, AM4, will be equipped with 63 L-, C-, K_u- and K_a-band transponders and have a power output of 14 kw., making it the largest Express telecom satellite ever built and the first to be supplied with a non-Russian bus. It will be launched in 2010 to 80 deg. E. Long.
