When it comes to runways, there's no such thing as being too safe, and the FAA's latest efforts to lower the risk of incursions include a $5-million incentive program and a top-to-bottom review of 22 U.S. airports. Now in its formative stages, the new program is "a public-private partnership at its best," says PAA acting Administrator Robert Sturgell. Late this year, the agency will reveal more details about the initiative, which will invite operators and manufacturers to offer or develop products, such as runway advisory warning systems, aimed at enhancing ground safety. The focus is on East Coast airports, specifically the New York to Florida corridor, as well as on NextGen air traffic control modernization activities.
