The 777 Freighter will begin flight testing within weeks, and already Boeing is drawing provisional plans for a freighter version of the 787. The sixth member of the 777 family, the freighter has a takeoff gross weight of 766,000 lb. and a range of 4,885 naut. mi. that allows it to slip in just below the payload capacity of the 747 series, Boeing's best-known freighter family. Chief Pilot Capt. Suzanna Darcy-Hennemann expects the flight test program to take 2.5 months and involve 300-350 hr. of flying plus 600 hr. of ground tests. The effort will benefit from Boeing's certification program for the 777-200LR on which the freighter is based. Two aircraft will be used in testing from Boeing Field in Seattle. The only remote work planned will be in Phoenix, Ariz., for hot-weather tests. The start of flight testing is given officially as this summer. But the freighter that rolled out here last week is nearly ready to fly, with only a few "travel" issues, or items to be cleared, says Darcy-Hennemann.
