A British ambition to buy additional Chinook helicopters dedicated to the Special Forces role appears to have been thwarted by the need for savings, although increased availability of the U.K.'s present Chinook fleet is helping to close any gap. The Defense Ministry had been hoping to fund the acquisition of a further 14 Boeing Chinooks to meets its Special Forces heavy-lift requirement as part of Planning Round 08. But the need to find cash savings from within the period covered by the planning cycle has apparently resulted in the proposal being shelved for now.
