At the 2005 Paris air show, Bombardier launched a highly-publicized campaign to win a launch customer for its proposed CSeries passenger jet. It couldn't reel one in, and within months the project was written off as dead by most industry pundits. That failure proved fortuitous. At last week's Farnborough air show, the Canadian aircraft builder launched development of a revamped CSeries design that is tailored for airlines battered by high fuel prices. Improvements include more lightweight composites and a next-generation Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan (GTF) engine that is designed to provide 12-15% better fuel burn than today's most efficient aircraft engines. Scheduled to enter service in 2013, the CSeries is being offered in 110- and 130-seat variants, with extended-range versions of each and a C130XT designed for "hot-and-high" operating conditions.
