The first Boeing 737s equipped with Honeywell's nitrogen-generation systems (NGS) for center fuel tanks are rolling off the assembly lines.The systems comply with an FAA rule issued early in July in response to the 1996 loss of TWA Flight 800 that was traced to an explosion of the center fuel tank.NGS is mandated for the center tank, not wing tanks.Systems for 777s will be available by year end and 747-8s will be equipped early in 2009.NGS adds 1201b.to a 737 and 275 lb.to a 747.Honeywell and Boeing have collaborated on the system since 2004.The rule requires compliance within two years and applies to com-mercial jets built since 1992 that are operated by U.S.airlines-about 2,700 airplanes.Retrofits will be required for 965 737s, 60 747s, 475 757s, 150 767s and 130 777s.Hamilton Sundstrand is building NGS fuel tanks for the 787.
