A major reshuffling of its mission is ahead for the U.S. Air Forces in Europe (Usafe) with the pending creation of U.S. Africa Command. In recent years, Africa has been one of the main areas of operation for Usafe, with an aim to reach out and establish ties with local militaries. When the Pentagon's interest in Europe started to wane, Usafe officials at the time looked to Africa to find a mission that would keep the command relevant. But Washington's decision to step up its commitment to Africa through Africa Command (Africom), along with its own USAF adjunct, effectively relegates Usafe to a supporting role. The Pentagon chose to pay more attention to Africa partly to try to keep the vast poverty and large number of unemployed youths from providing a breeding ground for terrorism. Africom is due to become operational Oct. 1. The U.S. Air Force plans to declare its component, the 17th Air Force, ready on Sept. 18. The date is the service's 61st birthday, but it also wants to signal that it is serious about the mission by standing up the command ahead of the set deadline. The location for 17th Air Force headquarters has not yet been announced, although it may temporarily be co-located near Usafe in the area of Ramstein AB, Germany.
