A flight in Universal Avionics' King Air 350 testbed here last month was an eye-opener on what an integrated cockpit certified to Part 25 standards can do for both airline aircraft as well as high-end business jets. Universal certified the integrated displays and software it sells for retrofit on existing aircraft to the Part 25 standard (that applies to aircraft of 12,500 lb. or more in takeoff weight). With this stringent standard met, the equipment can be retrofitted in existing commercial aircraft. "The avionics are very adaptable to retrofit situations," notes Daniel L. Reida, vice president of marketing for the Tucson, Ariz.-based company. Approximately 10-25% of Universal's sales each year are for the airline market, according to Reida. The King Air 350 is fitted with three of Universal's 890R Electronic Flight Instruments that measure 8.9-in. diagonally and provide a wide viewing area and high-resolution, sunlight-readable color displays. Universal's Cockpit Display Terminals (UCDT) are mounted on the pilot and copilot's yokes. These qualify as Class 3 Electronic Flight Bag systems-the same standard of EFB as on new Boeing 777s rolling off the production line now. The yoke-mounted position of the displays in the King Air make them easy to see and manipulate.
