Gulfstream Aerospace is actively researching sonic boom mitigation techniques and studying the noise impact of sonic over-flights to people on the ground, having verified the ability of its patented Quiet Spike extendable nose probe to turn a "boom" into a muted "rumble,"rnTests at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center included flights of an F-15B modified with the Quiet Spike, as well as supersonic over-flights by NASA F-18s of test subjects in a specially instrumented house in the Edwards AFB, Calif,, area. A further series of similar over-flight tests are being considered to assess the noise impact on the U.S. East Coast where differences in atmospheric moisture content and even house-buildinq styles could make a difference.
