Value-conscious lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) have authorized the Pentagon to restore an alternate engine program for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) but they also want cuts in the Army's Future Combat System and high-tech missile-defense programs. Votes by separate HASC subcommittees last week on segments of the Fiscal 2007 Defense authorization bill also recommended multiyear procurement for the F-22 Raptor and V-22 Osprey and more money to buy C-17s. But lawmakers also trimmed spending authorization for the Missile Defense Agency, the Kinetic Energy Interceptor and Multiple Kill Vehicle programs.
