Airbus has managed to give its A380 mega-transport the performance and flight characteristics of a much smaller aircraft, both in the air and on the ground. This accomplishment belies the fact that the A380-800 weighs in at 1.235 million lb. at maximum takeoff weight and looks large to the eye in its double-deck configuration. The newest Airbus transport is actually only 20-25% larger than the Boeing 747-400 in volume.
