Rolls-Royce is proposing an unducted turbofan design to power the Proactive Green Aircraft, one of three key platforms at the heart of a collaborative European effort into next-generation airframe concepts. Mark Taylor, senior project engineer within Rolls' advanced propulsion systems design group, says the concept is "a three-shaft architecture for a contrarotating open-rotor engine." The powerplant would be in the 25,000-lb.-thrust class. It is part of Europe's New Aircraft Concepts Research (Nacre) program; the third work package focuses on novel power-plant installation for the baseline aircraft concepts.
