The South African military is starting to recognize the need for follow-on buys of key defense equipment, but the country's near-term funding priority will be purchases to help support security of the 2010 soccer World Cup. Industry officials expect the event, which will draw massive worldwide attention to South Africa, to be a main driver of surveillance, communications and helicopter purchases in the next three years. And for industry, the timing couldn't be better: The last major defense spending wave-which involved the purchase of the Saab Gripen fighter, AgustaWestland A109 light utility helicopter and BAE Systems Hawk trainer-is nearing a close. Those deals involved large offset packages for domestic industry, which is looking for new feeder programs.
