A recent Feedback letter, "How Quickly We Forget" (Nov. 12-25, p. 5), illustrates well that our collective recollection of the Apollo flight to the Moon is spotty. The writer states that "the first such manned spacecraft to not just 'swing around' but orbit the Moon... was Apollo 11." In fact, Apollo 8, commanded by Frank Borman, was the very first manned spacecraft to enter lunar orbit in December 1968. Apollo 10, commanded by Thomas Stafford, entered lunar orbit for a "dress rehearsal" of a lunar landing, in May 1969. Apollo 11, commanded by Neil Armstrong, was actually the third U.S.-manned spacecraft to orbit the Moon, in July 1969.
