Britain has finally gotten back on the long road to reestablishing carrier-based airpower capability.The first landings and takeoffs of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter onboard the Royal Navy's new HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier on Sept. 25 came eight years after the last fixed-wing aircraft flew from a British carrier, and just 15 months since the new 60,000-ton ship sailed for the first time.Perhaps more important, the event takes place less than three years before the first planned operational cruise, which will see U.S. Marine Corps F-35s over the next 11 weeks. The aircraft are expected to perform around 500 take-offs and landings by day and night under various environmental conditions.
