In August, six budding startups began tackling problems identified by San Diego International Airport executives as priorities to help improve both passenger experience and the airport's bottom line. Working out of a decommissioned commuter terminal that serves as a real-world testbed, the companies are part of the airport's inaugural Innovation Lab Accelerator program.The initial class of entrepreneurs is focusing on two general areas: parking and making passengers' trips through the airport easier. But Rick Belliotti, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority director of innovation and small business development, has much bigger plans for the effort. "We want to change the world," he says.Not many airports have a programlike San Diego's-at least not yet. However, the attitude that gave birth to the idea five years ago is becoming far more prevalent. Airports realize that keeping up with steadily rising demand for passenger traffic, and the rapidly shifting expectations of their customers, requires taking a more active role in how their operation runs and how it will change.
