摘要

Airbus figured it would not be too hard to add an external platform for experiments to the International Space Station (ISS), staking a claim in the burgeoning market for commercial space services. After all, it built dozens of spacecraft and worked on station hardware for 20 years."We learned very quickly that we needed to think like a small startup, as a young entrepreneur with an idea to implement," says Oliver Juckenhoefel, vice president of Airbus Defense and Space's on-orbit services and exploration division. "We made so many mistakes."To gauge interest, in 2015-16 Airbus pitched the idea to NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) for a platform to be attached to the station's Columbus module, expanding the limited number of payload mounts for external experiments, technology demonstrations and operational instruments.
