Britain's Eurofighter Typhoon force is gearing up to take on the mantle previously held by the Panavia Tornado as the battle against the militants of the so-called Islamic State transitions into a coun-terinsurgency.Over the last four years, Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoons and Tornados have been supporting the international coalition against Islamic State group militants in Iraq, and since December 2015 in Syria.In all, British combat aircraft, as well as General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aircraft systems have performed 1,700 airstrikes, helping the Iraqi Armed Forces and Syrian Democratic Forces push the militants out of their strongholds. The militants hold an area that is just 2% of what they managed to secure four years ago.Aviation Week was one of a handful of publications given rare access to the British Typhoon unit flying anti-Islamic State group operations as part of the wider British operation, code-named Operation Shader. In August, we were allowed to witness combat aircraft operations from the British airbase at Akrotiri in Cyprus.
