It has become old hat to talk about the sluggishness of the satellite market. The satellite manufacturing industry has been hurting for the past few years as a result of a signifi- cant drop in orders for commercial satellites, and while a recovery seems to be underway, it is not sufficiently robust to make people forget 2002 and believe that truly good times are just around the corner. Only eight contracts were awarded for commercial satellites in 2002, including three AMCs and the Eutelsat W-F5 for the European Telecommunications Satellite Organization (Eutelsat), Galaxy 1RR for PanAmSat Inc., Hellas-Sat for Hellas-Sat Consortium Ltd., Telkom 2 for PT Telkomu-nikasi, and Thuraya 3 for Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications Co.
