摘要

De-peaking flight operations at hub airports―a technique used by network airlines in recent years to reduce costs and increase efficiency―runs the risk of market-share losses and negative overall results because of lengthened connection times, a paper presented at the Transportation Research Board's annual meeting suggests. Yu Zhang and Monica Menendez, graduate students at the University of California at Berkeley, and Mark Hansen, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering there, analyzed American Airlines' experience in 2002, when it smoothed out its schedules at Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). In this they chose an atypical situation―when an airline de-peaks, it usually does so at an airport where it is the dominant carrier, facing no significant competition for through traffic. But ORD is a hub for United Airlines as well as American.
