摘要

The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity should be getting up close and personal with the rocky rim of its mini-crater this week, taking direct-contact measurements of the first bedrock seen on Mars at sites determined by a week-long survey of the outcrop. Opportunity dug the first trench on Mars last week on the 23rd Martian day of its mission, reaching 4 in. into the soil to see what was underneath and how the soil behaved during the digging. That day was called "Sol 23," which was Feb. 16 at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) here. A Martian day is 39.6 min. longer than an Earth day. The trench was made at an area where the rover's miniature thermal emission spectrometer (Mini-TES) instrument showed high concentrations of the coarse crystalline grey hematite mineral-a material usually formed in water.
