NASA is preparing to ask scientists about which instruments they would need to make a reconnaissance of the Moon in anticipation of a human return sometime in the century's second decade. With the Moon planned as a way station for human missions to Mars, NASA will focus on the radiation environment there, as well as resources, such as water ice, that could support human activities and detailed mapping of potential landing sites. A handpicked team of scientists has listed requirements for the 2008 lunar orbiter, which is the first mission planned under President Bush's new space exploration plan.
