Low-fare carrier Independence Air's planned 300 daily departures from Washington Dulles International by summer's end will strain efforts to congestion-proof the airport, landside and airside, against the booming travel season. "One situation that bears watching in particular is the expected service growth at Washington's Dulles airport... when Independence Air is launched," said Inspector General Kenneth M. Mead, in testimony about airport delays last month before the Senate Appropriations Committee. Traffic at Dulles is expected to increase "significantly," with some estimates pointing to a more than 50% rise by this summer, he said, raising concerns about "terminal services resources and processing of passengers through security checkpoints."
