Irene Klotz's excellent column on the Apollo 10 lunar orbit dress rehearsal for Apollo U's lunar landing (May 20-June 2, p. 15) has one major technical error. Contrary to her description, the Apollo 10 crew maneuvered their Command-Service module (nicknamed Snoopy) to dock with and remove the Lunar Module 9 (nicknamed Charlie Brown) from the Saturn's upper stage immediately after it had fired them toward the Moon, instead of waiting 73 hr. Waiting would have cost three days of priceless time to troubleshoot any problems with Lunar Module systems or in simply docking the Command-Service module with the Lunar Module, as the Apollo 14 crew discovered later. On that flight, it took six docking tries and extensive work by the crew and Mission Control to overcome latch problems that foiled the initial five docking attempts where the Command-Service module literally bounced off the Lunar Module threatening the mission.
