As an inventor and structural engineer, I read with interest "Innovation Drive" (June 3-16, p. 58). I would like to know if a wing that is traditionally designed as a pure cantilever can be provided with an additional cable support from the top-of-wing position to an anchoring plate at the top of the fuselage. This would permit horizontal forces from two sides of the wing to cancel out, allowing for a lighter wing design and presumably could be used in many ways. Boeing's proposed compound-helicopter upgrade for the AH-64 Apache (May 20-June 2, p. 8) is reminiscent of similar modifications demonstrated on the UH-60 Black Hawk. Clearly, the vast fleets of these utility helicopters could also benefit from speed and range enhancements. The 2007 tests on the X-49 looked promising but were prematurely terminated, while Eurocopter X3 has more recently demonstrated the feasibility of compound helicopters. Additional modifications such as the retractable landing gear on the stealthy H-60 revealed during the raid on Osama bin Laden in early May 2011 could also be easily incorporated. The Pentagon should reexamine the potential of such modifications.
