Industry is beginning to shape the outline of the European Future Combat Air System with a keen eye toward avoiding mistakes of the past. At the Paris Air Show, Spain is expected to take its seat on the program, outlining its financial and industrial participation, while Airbus and Dassault-the primes on what will become a multibillion-euro project-and engine partners Safran and MTU are expected to detail plans for technology demonstrator programs funded by Berlin and Paris. Their goal will be to de-risk technologies not only for the Next-Generation Fighter (NGF) but also for the complex unmanned, data-processing and communications elements of the wider Future Combat Air System (FCAS), known as SCAF in France. The FCAS is rather like a "Russian doll" says Bruno Fichefeux, Airbus' FCAS program head.
