On a nice summer Paris evening this June, Embraer's new CEO Francisco Gomes Neto, not yet widely known in the industry, invited colleagues, customers and partners to the elegant Pavilion Gabriel just off the Avenue des Champs-Elysees. Embraer does not typically organize huge functions at routine air shows-but this year was different. In a year full of historical aviation milestones-the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 and Airbus, among several others-Embraer has something to celebrate as well. The company was founded on Aug. 19,1969, and is therefore only a few months younger than Airbus. Needless to say, no one involved in its beginnings even dreamed of its long-term success, particularly in the large regional aircraft market where it is now the dominant player.Yet the Paris event was bittersweet for many who have worked at Embraer much longer than Gomes Neto: While they celebrated the company as they have known it for decades, they were aware it will be very different very soon with Boeing taking over control of its commercial aircraft business. The unit will even carry a different name: Boeing Brasil-Commercial.
