Russia's new MC-21 narrowbody has finally made its public debut at the MAKS International Aviation and Space Salon in Moscow, held Aug. 27-Sept. 1. But what could have been an opportunity to showcase the Russian civil aerospace industry's return to the world stage has been overshadowed by the industry's struggles to deal with the fallout of economic sanctions.The MC-21, currently in flight testing, is expected to enter service powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1400G engines. But United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) is seeking indigenous versions for the aircraft's foreign components wherever possible. After U.S. sanctions were imposed in 2018 on two UAC composite suppliers-AeroCom-posit and ORPE Technologia-the manufacturer lost access to foreign fiber and prepregs. The program incurred a six-month delay while trying to find local substitutes.Equipping the aircraft with Russian-made engines will be the first step. The local alternative-the PD-14 developed by United Engine Corp. (UEC) subsidiary Aviadvigatel, was certified in 2018. Flight trials on the MC-21 are planned to start in the first quarter of 2020.
