Associations representing airlines, pilots and air traffic controllers are asking the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to address widespread interference of satellite navigation systems "as a matter of high priority."Recent interference of satellite navigation signals in the Middle East, some apparently caused by Russian military operations in Syria, motivated the call for action, says a knowledgeable source. The International Air Transport Association, the International Federation of Air Line Pilots' Association (Ifalpa) and the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers' Associations have made the request in a working paper submitted to the 40th session of the ICAO Assembly. ICAO's Technical Commission was expected to discuss the paper on Sept. 26.Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS)-the blanket term for the Chinese BeiDou, European Galileo, Russian Glonass and U.S. GPS satellite constellations-confer operational and air traffic management (ATM) benefits for aviation, the associations state.
