Michael Bruno is to be given accolades for his courageous recent "Going Concerns" column (Sept. 16-29, p. 14). He presented the issue-the abuse of the public trust and pocketbook by aerospace and defense (A&D) companies and the U.S. government-in an unemotional and factual manner. He clearly presented how A&D over-promises and the government overpays because there is not a system of checks and balances in place in dealing with these companies. Why are we trying to reinvent the wheel by designing a brand-new system to replace the Minuteman Ⅲ intercontinental ballistic missile (Aug. 19-Sept 1,p. 24)1 Why not use a much more modern, reliable and powerful missile that is a known entity, with training, maintenance and a semi-warm industrial base already in place-the Navy's Trident D5 ballistic missile?Not only would the price be far less than a new and unproven missile, if 400+ were purchased, economies of scale would certainly come into play and reduce cost even further. Savings could be allocated to speed up research in hypersonics and laser systems for both offensive and defensive needs. This might even allow the creation of a fourth leg to the current nuclear triad, thereby frustrating our enemies' plans and forcing greater use of their resources in an attempt to counter the further diversification of our systems.
